Job Description

Graduate Teaching Assistant

Do you want a broad primary role that gives you proper classroom experience before teacher training? Could you support pupils across the school and learn what strong day-to-day practice really looks like in a high-performing setting?

*** Graduate Teaching Assistant
*** September 2026 to July 2027
*** £85 - £101 per day
*** ‘Outstanding’ primary school, Ward of Yardley
*** General classroom and academic support across the primary phase

The Role:
Work across the primary phase providing classroom support, 1:1 help, and small-group academic intervention where needed. You will help pupils stay engaged, reinforce learning in core subjects, prepare simple resources, and work closely with teachers to support progress across the school day. Teaching assistants work across primary, special, and secondary education, and their main role is to support the class teacher to enhance pupils’ learning.

The Candidate:
You are adaptable, positive, and able to communicate clearly with both pupils and staff. You want practical school-based experience, enjoy helping children build confidence in their learning, and are keen to develop the classroom skills needed for a future in teaching. Primary teachers are responsible for the educational, social and emotional development of children between the ages of 3 and 11, which makes this kind of broad primary experience a strong foundation before training.

Requirements
  • Degree – A 2:2 or above in any subject.
  • Communication – Clear and confident verbal and written communication.
  • Enhanced DBS – Must hold or be willing to obtain an Enhanced DBS certificate.
  • Desire to work in education/with children – Genuine interest in supporting pupil progress and wellbeing.
  • Career Goals – A desire to train as a teacher and build a long-term career in education.

The School:
This ‘Outstanding’ primary school in the Ward of Yardley offers the chance to build wide-ranging classroom experience in a setting where support staff play an important role in pupil progress. You will work closely with experienced teachers, gain exposure to different classroom situations, and develop a realistic understanding of how strong primary practice supports children academically, socially, and emotionally. GOV.UK’s eligibility guidance for Enhanced DBS checks was last updated on 20 January 2026 and remains the key guidance for roles working with children.
